I haven't done much of anything with PHPwnage in the last year. My last commit to Bazaar/Launchpad was in May of last year.
But now I'm bored. I have nothing else to work on, so I think it's time - time to continue my work with a new focus. |

Modacon is a proposed trade event that will, barring complete lack of funds, be held next year. PHPwnage, hoping to improve our standing as a service provider (we don't just do this forum, you know) for gamers, will be hosting the event along side staff members from Modacity. One of our planning goals is to get these guys behind us, and after that start looking for corporate sponsers who would pay to get an event like this together (Intel, NVidia, AMD on the hardware side, Valve, Bungie on the software side, modders being a big source of future employment for them).
The reason I'm posting this little announcement is because we finally went ahead and purchased the domain, at which you'll find our beautifully crafted mono-color logo by AVPDragon/MrBig (he also made the original color version which you will see on print media and the future website, the black and white logo is reserved for t-shirts and large signs if we're tight on cash).
The real end goal of Modacon is to get a bunch of big-name modders in a room, pack it full of gamers, and get a party started.
As the primary sponsor for the event and head of the planning committee, PHPwnage.com will continue to post updates. You should look forward to our final decision on a venue, any announcements on corporate sponsorship, and updates to the website. Currently, the website is hosted here on the PHPwnage server, but it may be moved to a more suitable host at a later time.

I've been working on a new front-page for the upcoming OasisGames.net (which will probably just die before we reach a real opening). The system I've built for it is a single-file (except for media) PHP script that produces compliant XHTML (and nearly compliant CSS, but it uses some extra opacity options for cross-browser compatibility). An interesting little tidbit: unlike everything in PHPwnage, it has no tables, only DIVs! The new page will provide a much cleaner home for the PHPwnage site and news. Check out the incomplete OasisGames.net to see the page in action.

Well, I'm back from Hawaii (have been for a few days now), so development should pick up again for the new Admin Panel and porting the Forum, but that isn't what this is about.
For use with my massive collection of images I took on the islands, I made a bunch of tweaks to my phpDV indexing system. Suffice it to say, for the indended purpose of phpDV this is a major improvement.
The new DV supports Exif thumbnails and dates, fixes a few caching annoyances, and can even deliver thumbnails embedded into the page (making one-file distribution easy!). While some of this is only just barely working, I also have a few things that haven't been started for "DV 2":
- Per-directory configuration.
- Direct delivery of icons.
- Better caching options.
- Paging (requested by a colleague).
In other, some-what related news, I'd like to announce the third person to use phpDV: my good friend, Joe Averett. The second user was a man and his wife, who even use it on their home page (it's the only thing on their site, outside of the pictures)!
I'm also going to be getting a logo for DV up soon: it'll be the PHPwnage icon with "DV" instead of a P.

Big Plans for the Admin Panel |

I recently jotted down some new ideas for the Admin CP in PHPwnage 2.0. These plans include a complete rewritten and some great new features, so let's take a look:
Categories/Sections/Tabs
The new administration panel is divided into categories ("System", "News", "Forum", etc.) which then include sections: Forum could have "Management", "Moderation" and other such things. The next level is Tabs: The Forum > Management page may have tabs like "Boards", "New Board" and "Reorder", plus the hidden tabs "Edit Board" and "Edit Category".
Package Manager
I'm working on an extensive package system for PHPwnage to allow easy installation of new modules, plugins, themes and languages. The package system has a category in the admin panel ("Package Manager") which has sections "Updates", "Manage" and "Install". Updates shows packages with newer version of packages you have installed, Manage shows the packages already installed, and Install allows you to install packages from a Repo (a properly equipped server will be able to download the packages to a temporary directory and extra them, much like a desktop package manager). The packages themselves will be tar.gz archives for maximum compatibility across PHP installations. Their contents shouldn't be too unusual: Information on the package itself (name, version, description, icon URL, maintainer, home page), a list of dependencies (features more than other packages), a list of features provided (ie, a theme probably wouldn't supply anything, but a core replacement may provide a forum or compliant user system), and the files themselves. One thing I'm going to work on for at least 2.1 is to make the entire default system a set of packages (core-forum, core-user, core-news, etc.) so that it can be completely replaced. In the mean time, all of core is one package that provides everything, but the included sample module, plugin and themes will be separate plugins.
Plans for 2.1:
Admin Panel Extensions
The admin panel will not directly handle anything except the true core (everything under the System category), plugins and modules. Everything else will be implemented with extensions: Ie, User Management (which handles all user functions in an object-based system), the Forum package will provide forum management, etc. etc.
User Management
The forum will be stripped of its direct management of users. The primary reasoning for this is to make the forum not a requirement, as it will be a package in 2.1
Right now, I'm working on the new admin panel for 2.0: While it won't incorporate a complete extension system, it will still have some such functionality for dealing with plugins and modules, which will be able to have their own administrative options.

Right, so I haven't actually done anything recently. I know. I'm taking a short break because the next step is the Calendar, Forum and Admin CP: and that's a lot of work. I may get the Calendar done this afternoon, though, and then I'll be upgrading my blog to 2.0.0-pre.

I'd like to announce the release of the PHPwnage 1.9 development series! This release is part of a series of releases that will come in the next month, each bringing a new key feature from 2.0. Here we're introducing the WYSIWYG editor, powered by TinyMCE and the new directory layout for themes.
The new editor works with a number of bbCode tags to make your editing experience better - and if you don't like it, you can turn it off in your profile, or temporarily with the MCE button.
We've spent some time on the installer in 1.9 to make setting up a PHPwnage install easier. Along with some fixed bugs, you now have the option to enter a reCAPTCHA key at install time, keeping your forum secure from day one.
As with before, you can keep track of updates from the admin panel, so be sure to watch for 1.9.5, coming soon!
Packages for 1.9 are available from OGU in a number of formats.

Things are going quite nicely with the new template system. So far, the index and ajoined bits have been converted to templates:
The task now is to move the suport code into includes.php and the various other files (header.php, sidebar.php, etc.) so that it can just be loaded from the main script with a require_once.
More on the template specs:
- Templates are included by a single file, ie, if I'm on the index, I'm only asking for index.tpl - so index.tpl has to display everything else that it needs. This means PHPwnage itself is only dealing with top-level templates, and it allows each different page to look completely different, if you wanted to do that.
- Templates can include their own quick Smarty functions by creating a plugin for each and placing it in a 'functions' directory which will be included in the plugin path when Smarty is loaded. This allows you to define simple, repeated output functions by combining the function and more templates. One good use for it in the classic template would have been blocks and panels, but I'm just going to do it for buttons (because the panels may change considerably as I expand the classic theme to be less classic but still work with the original styles)
- If you haven't looked at 0.9 yet, then you don't know that the old "themes" are now referred to as "Styles", though their CSS file must now be named "theme.php". This is because I feel a theme should be a complete package: icons, template, style. Styles are applied to templates and templates include icons.
- If you ever need a quick bit of PHP, but don't want a full function, Smarty lets you do that, so you'll have no trouble with complex bits of code.
- The translation database is available from the $translate variable: $translate.forum.blah_blah_blah.
- Icons are in $icontheme.whatever.

A number of these are being deprecated. For example, is_writeable() is unnecessary as we already collect a $board every where we would normally need to do this - it's just redundant extra SQL calls. ($user['level'] >= $board['top_level']) achieves the same thing ($user.level >= $board.top_level in a theme). Some of these will be removed completely or at least moved elsewhere, and pretty much all will be renamed. postCount() is another good one: We'll be caching this value in the `user` table and updating it with the board fixing options and when adding topics. In terms of bbCode, I'm hoping to expand the highlighted code tags to Python and PHP. Posts will also keep track of a user name for guest posting in a separate varchar(50).

PHPwnage.com is now running the new development series, 1.9. This means you can enjoy the WYSIWYG editor, powered by TinyMCE. We're also now keeping track of the join dates of new users - all users who joined before today will have today as their join date (including myself!). If you happen to know precisely when you joined, you can let me know and I can convert it to a timecode and change it in your account.
This release will be officially made available this weekend, though earlier than I had originally planned. All that's left for it is to create some release materials. For the risk-takers, packages are available from the usual source.

As 1.8.3 is only a bug fix release, this will not be a formal release announcement. I'd just like to announce the release of 1.8.3, which is 1.8.2 but with some minor bug fixes. If you are currently using an older version from before 1.8.2, the same upgrade rules apply.
Bugs fixed:
- Aeolus theme inconsistencies with admin/moderator post bits
- Fixed missing $_PREFIX in image gallery that blocked uploads on sites using MySQL table prefixes
- Small issues with Greeble theme have been fixed.
Archives for this release are available from OGU. Archives will be mirrored on Launchpad this weekend, with the release of the intermediate 1.9 development release.

I'm happy to announce to the opening of the new PHPwnage wiki! The wiki will be the main source of documentation from now on. It's far from complete, and I need your help to get it up to scratch. Hopefully, everything should be ready to go before the big 2-point-0 release. For now, I'd like to get some installation and configuration instructions up for 1.9 - which I'll be releasing shortly (along with 1.8.3, a minor bug fix and the last of the 1.8 series).
Please, register on the Wiki and start editing.
In other news, yes, 1.9 is coming soon! I've just finished some of the last fixes on the WYSIWYG editor, which will be the only real new feature in 1.9. You can check it out on O-G, as I've said before. After I get this ported from O-G's code base to the 1.9 code base and get the translation database updated, it should be ready for a beta. Then I'll need to strip out all of the unused parts from TinyMCE (themes, plugins, etc.) - then it should be ready to ship!
1.8.3 will also come (this weekend!) which has a few minor updates to 1.8 - bug fixes that just didn't make it into 1.8.2. Primarily, the bug fixes relate to minor theme issues.
The release schedule for PHPwnage - from 1.8.3 to 2.1 - will be posted later tonight.

Some new developments in PHPwnage 1.9:
- 1.9 will not be released with templates or plugins
- 1.9 will be released a lot earlier
- 1.9 will be a bridge from 1.8 to 2.0
- 2.0 will have templates and plugins
- 2.0 will ship with new icons, new themes and the rep plugin
- 1.9 will ship with the WYSIWYG editor
Also:
- 1.8.3 (the final bug fix in the 1.8 series) will be out soon (also expect a release schedule up to 2.1 this afternoon, just need to type it up)
- Wiki.PHPwnage.com will be coming soon - running MediaWiki. It will have development notes, plugins, templates, styles, icon sets, and be a resource for support.
And, in other news: TinyMCE is now working on O-G with quick reply and quick edit, as well as articles. Enjoy!

WYSIWYG Editor Coming to PHPwnage 1.9 |

One of the biggest new features slated for 1.9 is integration with TinyMCE. The basics are already up and running over at Oasis-Games.com but more work is yet to be done.
So far, the editor has the following:
- Fairly stable editing of basic bbCode (bold, underline, strikeout, etc.)
- Acceptable handling of linefeeds (this is what really needs work, though)
- Uses the standard editing toolbar (because otherwise I'd have to make major changes to get things to be properly themed)
I have some plans on what to get in there before release:
- PosterMini (the thing used for quick reply, quick edit, and posting comments on news articles) support.
- User configuration option (which I don't have simply because I don't have time to do the SQL edits right now).
- Integration with theme CSS (so that your post looks how it should)
- Integration with advanced but static bbCode (ie, 'hide', 'code', 'quote', but not 'java' or 'csharp', possibly 'youtube')

Silly me. We're not dead, we just weren't working on anything.
I just pushed a bunch of updates to PHPwnage including a new theme and some extra theme support.
You're going to need to run 'fix_ims.php' to update your SQL tables (and it may not work properly, so warn your users that they may lose their IM contacts...)
Basically, there are no longer any predefined IM types: You can specify a list in the site info (You can't update it in the admin panel yet, I'm working on it).
This makes the tables cleaner. We've been running with this modification on O-G for a while now.
Also new are pages on the index. You can also edit the index page to start showing news at a certain index (we were using this on O-G to block old articles from showing up normally, but it has been disabled now). This will later be moved to the config or a MySQL cell in site_info.
The new theme is "Greeble". It's a port of the theme from the Greeble Framework website (see previous news post) to PHPwnage and it looks really cool. I only had to add a few small things to make it work: particularly, a div starting after the header and ending before the footer, and changing the footer to use its own style classes.
I have not yet tested the installer, but it should be working (assuming I didn't break anything when fixing it up!).
Packages will be available after I bump the version to 1.8.2 (though it should be 1.9, as I've changed MySQL structures). fake edit: Just bumped the version, packages soon.
So, we're not really dead, and enjoy the updates.
real edit: Seems I made a type-o in greeble. The line 'background-position: fixed' should be 'background-attachment: fixed'. I'm not going to put out a new package for it, but it'll be fixed in the next release.

And in a few days/weeks/years we'll be releasing 1.8.1, with numerous bug fixes you'll want to get in on. Mostly small stuff, like some guest posting fixes and such. There won't be any new features per-say, but it'll be worth getting (plus it's just downloading an archive and extracting it, not like you need to reinstall or anything).
So, look forward to that.
Also, theres no one here. It's so empty...

PHPwnage is currently under a temporary development freeze. As I'm the only developer, and I have more important things to work on, development of PHPwnage will be at a stand-still for the next few months. I'll still try and get security fixes out in good time, though. |

Alright, maybe I shouldn't be so hard on myself. Some projects don't fix bugs like this for another few days.
I rushed the security fixes and left some bugs in there. They should all be cleared up now, but I just wanted to say sorry to the early downloaders, or people who trying to access the site this morning while we were done. |

In my ADD state, I seem to have left a bunch of SQL queries open to attack, and didn't check permissions on a bunch of POST calls. I've gone and fixed what should be all of these and issued a security update. I've replaced all the uploaded archives, so a quick redownload should do it.
If you downloaded before 2:30PM EDT today, you probably have the old version. Check your admin panel, which will inform you that you need to download the update (the internal version in the bug fix is 1.8bf1, so it uses a different piece of update text).
e: If your article page doesn't work, try again, had some troubles with the archives. I'm dropping all formats other than tar.gz and zip to make my own life easier.

Yes, already I'm exploring ideas for 1.8.1. I already know I want to make some changes to pages really quickly and split some stuff off (like editing news articles). I also want to implement an iframe for the admin panel's update notices (as a fallback) so that they work on hosts such as Byethost. All this in due time, have to let the 1.8 release settle first, plus I'm starting to work on other things a bit more and I have school to worry about.

Announcing PHPwnage 1.8, a free and open-source forum, news site, image gallery, and calendar powered by PHP and MySQL!
This release is the first to be licensed under the GPL (v3), and offers hundreds of improvements over the previous release.
 
 
New in 1.8:
- Image Gallery: Lets users upload and view images.
- Button Icons: Make your forum look better with icons beside button labels.
- Moderation: New moderation tools have been added - split topics, merge topics and more.
- Quick Edit: In a hurry? Use the quick edit button to make speedy changes to your posts.
- ReCAPTCHA: ReCAPTCHA has been (optionally) implemented for forum registration.
- Security: 1.8 features improved security and bug fixes.
- Theming: Theming capabilities have been vastly improved in 1.8, as has the look of the forum.
- Icon Themes: 1.8 comes with a brand new Tango icon set (icons are either directly from or derivatives of icons from the Tango Desktop Project and are under the Creative Commons by-sa license) as well as new icon theming abilities.
- Translation: 1.8 offers easy translation to other languages (note that only US English is provided, as we don't have anyone who speaks another language on our team, help is appreciated!)
- Bazaar: All new updates for PHPwnage are stored in a Bazaar repository run through Launchpad.
- Administration: The Admin panel has been greatly improved.
- Paging: A new paging system has been implemented that makes navigating content even easier.
- XHTML Compliance: PHPwnage is now completely XHTML compliant - just run us through W3C! Same for our CSS themes and RSS feed.
- Search: Search has been vastly improved with search-by-author and paged results.
- Calendar: Minor improvements have been made to the Calendar/
- Member List: The included member list module has been rewritten to show more information and allow sorting by name, id, and posts.
- Code Style: As PHPwnage is now open-source, we've rewritten and restyled the PHP code to be significantly more presentable.
- Installer: The installer has been completely rewritten to be easy to use and provide better failure reports.
- Table Prefixes: You can now enter a table prefix to use for your MySQL database
- Guest Posting: Guest posting has been greatly improved to provide a much better experience for more public forums.
- Messages: The error message and redirect system has been improved and themed to make using PHPwnage more enjoyable for your users.
- RSS: RSS now works. That's about the only way we can put it.
- Mobile: The mobile page (now mobile.php) has been completely rewritten to provide an interface to the forum for your mobile phone or other portable device.
- New Themes: PHPwnage now has two new themes: Crystal and Pristine (as well as "crystalclean", a different take on Crystal). Deprecated themes have been removed and require modification to work properly with the new theme system.
- New Logo: We have a brand new logo designed by TJ Fadness and vectorized by myself.
- News: You can now use bbCode for formatting news articles.
- Configuration: Configuration options have been moved to config.php so they're all in one place and unchanged when you update.
- Profiles: Profiles now store themes, icon sets, backgrounds, and language settings. The profile viewer has been redesigned.

Installation:
Depending on how your hosting is set up, you will need to either extract the archive and upload its contents, or upload the archive directly. After getting the files onto your web host, you should create a new MySQL database (or otherwise ensure that you have access to one) and keep your login information close at hand. Navigating to the index on an non-installed copy of PHPwnage will direct you to the installer. Read the welcome message and press the button labeled "Continue" and you will be presented with some brief information on the licensing for PHPwnage and the included modules. Again, press "Continue" and you will be prompted to enter information for your MySQL database which will be stored in the file 'config.php'. Press "Continue" when you are done.
Note: If you are presented with a message that says the config file creation failed, read and follow the directions given. PHPwnage will fail to create a config file if you do not have the appropriate permissions to do so (which can often be the case on free hosting plans).
The next page will prompt you for some default information to store in the MySQL database such as your site's title and the username to use for the root account (the first account created has special privileges for changing permissions).
Note: If PHPwnage fails to connect to your MySQL server, the config file's generic failure message will be displayed. If the installer can not connect to the database, but successfully connects to the server, it will attempt to create the database for you, which will almost definitely fail unless you have complete control over your MySQL server. Be sure to read any error messages and follow any instructions given.
The next page will confirm your installation and attempt to create a lock file for the installer. If the installer fails to create a lock, it will inform you that you should remove 'fresh_install.php' (which you should do regardless of whether the lock succeeded).
You can now start setting up your site from the administration panel (after logging in).
You should set up your forums and image galleries first, as none are provided.
Upgrading:
If you need to upgrade from 1.7 or 1.7.1, please post on our forums to be guided through the process as an upgrade tool is not provided. The next release will include an upgrade tool from this version, but anything before 1.8 is unsupported. You will need to update your configuration file with default values that have been added and modify your SQL tables and data according the changes made in the installer.
